5 Common Publishing Mistakes to Avoid Before Getting Your Book Published
Writing a book may begin with a blank page, but publishing one involves an entire maze of decisions after the final full stop. Knowing the publishing mistakes to avoid can help authors navigate these decisions more confidently and avoid common problems during the publishing process. There is editing to consider, a cover to design, formatting to perfect, metadata to get right, marketing to plan, and distribution to figure out. And somewhere in the middle of all this, there is usually an author wondering, “Wasn’t writing the book supposed to be the hard part?”
The truth is, a good manuscript is only the beginning. Even a brilliant story can struggle if it is poorly edited, packaged without thought, difficult to discover online, or released without a plan to reach its readers. The publishing process has plenty of moving parts, and overlooking even one of them can affect how your book is perceived and, ultimately, how far it travels.
That does not mean authors need to become experts in every corner of publishing. It means knowing where the common pitfalls are and making informed decisions about where to take control and where to seek professional help.
Whether you are preparing to submit your manuscript, considering self-publishing, or looking for an end-to-end publishing partner, avoiding these common mistakes can save you time, money, and a few unnecessary headaches. Here are some of the biggest publishing mistakes authors should watch out for before their book makes its way into readers' hands.
1. Thinking Your Manuscript Does Not Need Editing
You have read your manuscript twenty-seven times. You know every character, chapter, plot twist, and suspiciously placed comma. That is precisely why editing is difficult to do alone—and knowing the publishing mistakes to avoid can make a big difference.
Even the strongest manuscript can benefit from another set of trained eyes. Developmental editing can look at the bigger picture, while copyediting focuses on language, consistency, and sentence structure. Proofreading comes later, catching the small errors that somehow survive every previous round.
Skipping editing to save time or money can affect the final reading experience. A polished manuscript gives readers fewer reasons to put the book down and more reasons to turn the page. At Nu Voice Press, the editorial process is treated as an important stage in developing a manuscript into a professionally published book, while keeping the author's voice and story at the centre of the process.
2. Treating the Cover as an Afterthought
Readers are often told not to judge a book by its cover. Readers, unfortunately, have not signed this agreement.
Your cover is usually the first thing a potential reader sees, whether they are browsing a bookstore, scrolling through an online marketplace, or encountering your book on social media. A cover should do more than look attractive. It should communicate the genre, tone, and positioning of the book.
A dark fantasy novel and a light-hearted romance should not look like distant cousins who accidentally borrowed the same wardrobe. Good cover design helps readers understand what kind of book they are looking at before they even read the blurb.
When choosing a publishing partner, review their existing catalogue and examine how their books are designed. Nu Voice Press, for example, approaches cover design as part of the overall positioning of a book, ensuring that the visual identity works with the story and the audience it hopes to reach.
3. Ignoring Metadata Because It Sounds Technical
Metadata may not be the most glamorous part of publishing, but neither is filling out forms at the airport. Both can determine where you end up.
A book's metadata includes information such as its title, subtitle, author name, description, keywords, categories, and other details that help readers, retailers, and online platforms understand and discover the book.
Poor metadata can make even a well-written book harder to find. The right keywords and categories can help connect a book with readers who are already searching for similar titles. Your book description also plays a role in convincing someone to move from “What is this?” to “Add to cart.”
Metadata should therefore be considered early in the publishing process, not five minutes before the book goes live.
4. Believing That Publishing Is the Same as Marketing
Publishing a book does not automatically mean readers will find it. The internet is a very large place, and your book does not arrive with a marching band.
Marketing helps create awareness before and after publication. This can include social media, author branding, early reviews, book launches, advertising, media outreach, and connecting with the right reading community.
The important question is not simply, “How do I market my book?” but “Who is this book for, and how do I reach them?” At Nu Voice Press, publishing is viewed as part of a larger journey that considers not only how a book is produced but also how it can be positioned and introduced to readers.
5. Trying to Do Absolutely Everything Yourself
A wise person once said, “it takes a village (read: Publishing House) to get your work published”.
There is nothing wrong with wanting control over your book. But there is a difference between being involved in the publishing process and becoming the editor, cover designer, typesetter, metadata specialist, marketer, distributor, and customer support department all at once.
Authors can certainly learn these skills and choose to manage every stage themselves. But doing everything alone takes time, expertise, and energy. Before long, you may find yourself spending more time fixing margins and researching keywords than writing your next book.
Choosing where to take control and where to seek professional support can make the publishing journey far more manageable. The goal is not to hand your book over and disappear. It is to stay involved in the decisions that matter while working with people who understand the different stages of publishing.
Nu Voice Press, the publishing imprint of Hubhawks, offers authors end-to-end publishing support, helping take a book from manuscript to publication and beyond. From editorial support and cover design to formatting, metadata, publishing, distribution, and marketing, authors can access professional guidance across different stages of the journey without having to build an entire publishing operation around a single book.
After all, writing the book was already a full-time adventure. You do not necessarily need to become an editor, designer, marketer, and distributor before you can call yourself an author.
A successful publishing journey is built one decision at a time: a manuscript that has been properly edited, a cover that makes readers stop scrolling, formatting that makes the book comfortable to read, metadata that helps the right audience discover it, and marketing that gives the book a reason to enter the conversation.
And yes, you can do everything yourself. You can spend your Sunday fixing chapter breaks, your Monday researching keywords, your Tuesday wondering why the cover looks different on three different screens, and your Wednesday trying to understand book distribution. It is possible. Whether it is the best use of your time is another question.
The smarter approach is to know which parts of the process require your voice and vision, and which parts can benefit from professional expertise to avoid common publishing mistakes to avoid.
That is where Nu Voice Press, the publishing imprint of Hubhawks, comes in. From editorial support, cover design and formatting to metadata, publishing, distribution and marketing, Nu Voice Press helps authors navigate the publishing journey from manuscript to reader, without expecting them to become an entire publishing department overnight.
Your story deserves to be read. Let the right people help it get there.
