How to Submit a Manuscript to Publishers: 10 Essential Tips for Authors
For many aspiring authors, finishing a manuscript feels like reaching the final page of a long journey. But once the book is written, another important chapter begins: submit a manuscript to publishers. Knowing how to submit a manuscript to a publisher can make the difference between a promising submission being noticed and getting lost in an already crowded inbox.
The publishing industry receives countless manuscripts every year, and publishers are looking for more than a good story or a well-written book. A strong book submission shows that an author understands the publishing process, knows their target audience, and has taken the time to present the manuscript professionally. Choosing the right publishing house is equally important, as the publisher should understand the book, its genre, and the author’s vision.
From researching publishers accepting manuscript submissions and understanding their submission guidelines to preparing a compelling synopsis, author bio, and query letter, every part of the submission can influence how a manuscript is received. Authors should also ensure that their manuscript follows the required manuscript formatting guidelines before submitting it.
Nu Voice Press focuses on discovering and developing stories that deserve to be read, remembered, and celebrated. For authors exploring traditional publishing in India and looking for a publishing partner that values distinctive voices and strong storytelling, understanding how the manuscript submission process works is an important first step.
In this guide, we explore 10 essential tips to submit a manuscript to publishers, covering what authors should do before, during, and after the manuscript submission process, and how to give their book the strongest possible start on its journey towards publication.
Tip 1: Do Your Research
Before submitting your manuscript, pay attention to the publishers behind the titles you admire. You can also browse Amazon and publisher websites to identify publishing houses that accept manuscript submissions and specialise in your genre.
The goal is not simply to find the biggest publisher. It is to find a publishing house that fits your book, genre, readership, and writing style. Make a note of publishers that regularly release books similar to yours and check whether they are currently accepting submissions.
If you are exploring traditional publishing in India, begin with publishers and publishing houses in your home market. For authors considering a publishing partner such as Nu Voice Press, understanding the kind of books the house publishes is an important part of deciding whether your manuscript is a good fit.
Tip 2: Build Your Hit List
Once you know what you are looking for, create a focused list of potential book publishers and literary agents. Aim for at least 20 relevant names rather than submitting randomly to every publisher you can find.
Research who publishes books in your specific genre and whether they are open to new and emerging authors. Online writing communities, author networks, literary events, and social media can also help you discover publishers, agents, and submission opportunities.
Follow relevant publishing houses and literary agencies on social media and regularly check their websites for updated submission guidelines, open submission windows, and manuscript requirements. Speaking to published authors can also provide useful insights into the book publishing process and help you identify reputable publishers.
Tip 3: Send to 20 in Your First Mail Shot
Gone are the days when authors had to print, bind, and physically post an entire manuscript to a publisher. Today, most authors submit a manuscript to publishers through email, online submission portals, or dedicated submission forms on a publisher's website.
Before pressing send, carefully read the publisher's submission guidelines. Some may request a synopsis and query letter, while others may ask for sample chapters, an author bio, or a complete manuscript.
Once everything is prepared and formatted correctly, take a deep breath and send your manuscript. A well-researched, professionally prepared submission gives your book a stronger chance of making the right first impression.
Tip 4: Follow the Publisher’s Submission Guidelines
Once you have identified publishers that are a good fit for your manuscript, the next step is to understand exactly how they want to receive it. Every publishing house can have different submission requirements, so never assume that one format works for everyone.
Check the publisher’s official website for details about accepted file formats, word count, synopsis, sample chapters, author biography, query letter, and other supporting documents. Some publishers may accept submissions by email, while others may have an online submission portal.
For authors considering traditional publishing in India, following these instructions carefully is an important part of making a professional first impression.
Tip 5: Polish Your Manuscript Before Submitting
Completing your manuscript is an achievement, but it does not necessarily mean it is ready for a publisher. Before submitting your book, take time to revise, edit, and proofread your manuscript.
Read through the book more than once and look beyond spelling and grammar. Consider whether the structure works, whether the characters or arguments are developed effectively, whether sections feel repetitive, and whether the overall manuscript delivers what the opening promises.
A polished manuscript demonstrates that you take your writing seriously. While editorial changes may still happen during the publishing process, submitting your strongest possible draft gives publishers a better opportunity to evaluate the book itself.
Tip 6: Write a Strong Query Letter
A query letter is often your first opportunity to introduce yourself and your book to a publisher or literary agent. It should be concise, professional, and compelling enough to make the reader want to know more.
Introduce the manuscript clearly by mentioning its title, genre, word count, and central premise. Include a short pitch that captures what makes the book interesting without attempting to explain every detail. You can also briefly mention relevant writing experience, previous publications, awards, or professional expertise.
Avoid turning your query letter into a lengthy personal story. The objective is simple: give the publisher a clear reason to read further.
Tip 7: Prepare a Compelling Synopsis
If a publisher asks for a book synopsis, treat it as an important part of your submission rather than an afterthought. A synopsis gives the publisher an overview of your manuscript, including its central storyline, major characters, key developments, and overall direction.
For fiction, remember that a synopsis is different from a book blurb. A blurb is designed to intrigue readers without revealing too much. A synopsis is intended to help a publisher understand the complete story, including how the major conflicts are resolved.
Follow the publisher’s requested length and format. Keep the writing clear and focused, and make sure the synopsis reflects the strongest elements of your manuscript.
At Nu Voice Press, the synopsis is one of the most important parts of your manuscript that helps the editorial side to take significant decisions on the book during the manuscript submission process.
Tip 8: Know Your Target Audience
A publisher needs to understand not only what your book is about, but also who is likely to read it. Before submitting your manuscript, identify your target readership as clearly as possible. Think about the genre, age group, interests, themes, and reading habits of your potential audience. It can also help to identify comparable books and explain what makes your manuscript different from existing titles.
Understanding your readership shows that you have considered your book as more than a manuscript. You have begun thinking about its place in the book market and publishing industry. This is particularly useful when approaching a publishing house such as Nu Voice Press, where distinctive voices and stories need to be positioned for the readers most likely to connect with them.
Tip 9: Build Your Author Profile
Your manuscript should remain at the centre of your submission, but your author profile can provide useful context. Prepare a concise author biography that highlights information relevant to your writing and your book.
Mention previous publications, professional experience, awards, expertise, speaking engagements, or other achievements when they genuinely strengthen your submission. If you have an existing author website or professional social media presence, make sure it reflects you and your work appropriately.
For emerging authors, building an author profile does not mean having thousands of followers. It means establishing a professional identity and giving publishers a clearer picture of the person behind the manuscript during the manuscript submission process.
Tip 10: Be Patient and Keep Track of Your Submissions
Once you submit a manuscript to publishers, patience becomes part of the process. Publishers and literary agents receive large numbers of submissions, and responses can take time.
Most importantly, do not treat rejection as the final word on your book. Publishing decisions can depend on editorial preferences, market requirements, publishing schedules, and whether a manuscript fits a particular publisher’s list at that moment.
The goal is not to submit your manuscript everywhere. It is to find the right publishing partner for your book. Whether you are exploring traditional publishing, researching Indian publishing houses, or considering a publisher such as Nu Voice Press, thoughtful research and a professional submission can make the journey from manuscript to published book far more focused.
